Ketamine in treatment-resistant major depression

This randomised placebo-controlled parallel-group multi-centre trial (n=100; withdrawn) aimed to study the efficacy of ketamine infusion (35mg/70kg) in relieving symptoms of depression among patients who did not respond adequately to conventional treatment.

Unfortunately, the trial was stopped on 14/08/2007 due to significant challenges in recruiting eligible participants. The study, conducted by the University of Kuopio in Finland and sponsored by Niuvanniemi Hospital, involved patients aged 18 to 55 with major depression disorder or type two bipolar affective disorder.

The primary outcome measure was the change in HAMD-17 scores during the first seven days after infusion compared with scores on the control day. The study started on 09/06/2006 and was planned to end on 30/09/2007, with recruitment taking place between those dates at Niuvanniemi Hospital in Kuopio, Finland.
