The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) partnered with MAPS to create a psychedelic research centre to study the therapeutic effects of psychedelic drugs on mental illness. Well-known psychedelics researcher, Michael Mithoefer, of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at MUSC will lead research at the centre. Along with MDMA, the MUSC research centre plans on investigating naturally-occurring psychedelics such as psilocybin, mescaline, and DMT.
Jennifer Jones of MUSC is currently conducting research exploring the effects of ketamine in the treatment of opioid use disorder and depression.
