5-MeO-DMT, or O-methyl-bufotenin, is a tryptamine alkaloid found in both plant and animal sources, including high concentrations in the parotid gland secretions of the Colorado River toad and the Sonoran Desert toad. The psychedelic effects are fast-acting and short-lived, similar to DMT yet still very distinct in character. The legality of 5-MEO-DMT is similar to DMT apart from a period between 1971 and the late 1980s where the Church of the Tree of Life used 5-MeO-DMT as a sacrament. A UK-based company, Beckley Psytech, is exploring the use of 5-MeO-DMT for the treatment of a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and substance misuse
