The US Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has an important role to paly in realizing the potential of psychedelic medicines. The VA are tasked with providing veterans with the the most effective treatments for any illnesses or disorders they may have incurred while actively serving in the military.
PTSD is one of the most common disorders experienced by ex-servicemen and, therefore, the VA have been paying very close attention to the potential of psychedelics for treating this particular disorder. The VA are working closely with research groups to advance the development of psychedelic-assisted therapies for PTSD and making such therapies available for veterans.
In September 2021, it was announced that a clinical trial using MDMA to treat PTSD will take place in a VA-run hospital in the Bronx, New York. The trial will be led by Dr Rachel Yehuda who has a wealth of experience treating people with PTSD.
