This study evaluates the effects of Salvinorin A (SA). SA is the active ingredient of the plant Salvia divinorum that is known to have been used by Mexican Indians as part of religious rituals. The purpose of this project is to understand what people experience when they consume Salvinorin A.

Dose-related Behavioral, Subjective, Endocrine and Psychophysiological Effects Of the Kappa Opioid Agonist Salvinorin A in Humans
This double-blind, randomized controlled trial (n=10) assessed the behavioural, subjective, cognitive, psychophysiological and endocrine effects of Salvia divinorum (0, 8 and 12 mg) in healthy participants. Salvia produced psychotomimetic effects and perceptual alterations, including dissociative and somaesthetic effects, increased plasma cortisol and prolactin and reduced resting EEG spectral power, but did not produce euphoria, cognitive deficits or changes in vital signs. Overall, Salvia was well tolerated.

Measures Used

States of Consciousness Questionnaire
The States of Consciousness Questionnaire (SOCQ) was developed to assess the occurrence features of the change in consciousness induced by psilocybin and includes the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ). The SOCQ consists of 100 items, 43 of which are from the MEQ.
